7 Items to Pack for a Fun and Healthy Day in the Sun

One of the most anticipated times of the year is upon us, and whether you’ve been counting down the days or dreading its arrival, summer is just around the corner. As the days heat up, our drive to do summer-y things does too, including all day, outdoor recreational activities and trips to the beach.

But so much fun in the sun can be unhealthy for us if we don’t make sure to take care of our bodies first and foremost. Whether you’re headed to the ocean or a lake packing, pack the following items for a healthy day in the sun.

Hydration. No matter where you go (or what time of year it is, really), you need to stay hydrated. Before heading out the door in the morning, fill a glass water bottle and take it in your bag or car.

Skin protection. Sunscreen is important even on overcast days. It ensures that, while you’re enjoying those warming rays and a little vitamin D, you’re not also damaging your skin cells. Use the EWG’s list of recommended sunscreens to avoid potentially dangerous products with questionable ingredients.

Shade. Sometimes the sun simply can be too intense, and when at a beach shade can be your best friend but is difficult to find. Bring varying forms of your own, including sun hats, light layers, and a beach umbrella.

Lip balm. Your lips can get chapped and sunburned just as easily as your regular skin. Make sure to bring a tube of lip balm along with you, because there’s nothing worse than burning, sensitive skin at the beach.

Snacks. The hot sun takes a lot out of you. Refuel by bringing healthy, nutritional snacks with you, such as fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, and chopped veggies.

Eye protection. Just like the sun can damage your skin, it also wreaks havoc on your eyes. Packing a pair of sunglasses is the perfect way to protect your eyes while out in the sun.

Aloe Vera. On the off chance that you didn’t use enough sunscreen, bring a bottle of Aloe Vera with you. If your skin gets a little too toasty, you can lather this gel on it for near instant pain and heat relief.

We’re so happy it’s summer! After the long winter months, summer is a nice respite from the cold and gloom. However, this anticipation can oftentimes lead to “over doing it” in the sun. The next time you’re headed out the door, be sure to grab these things for a safe, healthy day in the sun!
