7 Easy and Healthy Ways to Revive a Boring Salad

During the hot months of summer, while fresh fruits and vegetables are in-season, it feels wonderful to reach for a cool, refreshing salad. But your typical bed of lettuce and dressing mixture can quickly become blasé. So here are some tips to revive your boring salad!

Switch out greens. You most likely have your go-to greens. For some of us, it’s a spring lettuce mixture while others prefer simple spinach. Changing your base and trying something new introduces new tastes and textures to one of the healthiest meals out there. Some options include:

  • Romaine
  • Bibb lettuce
  • Arugula
  • Kale
  • Savoy cabbage
  • Seaweed
  • Chard
  • Cabbage
  • Dandelion greens
  • Endive
  • Radicchio

Dress it up. While you should be careful with dressings because most store-bought options are filled with questionable ingredients, unhealthy fats, and tons of sugar and salt, you can mix things up a bit with a few different healthy concoctions instead, like:

  • Fresh-squeezed citrus
  • Simple olive oil and vinegar
  • Spritz of garlic juice
  • Vinaigrette

Mix up proteins. If you’re opting for a salad as a complete meal, it should include a good amount of protein. But a plain grilled chicken breast, day in and day out, gets old very quickly. Try instead:

  • Salmon fillet
  • Sliced avocado
  • Raw nuts and seeds
  • Beans
  • Edamame
  • Hard boiled egg

The other greens. When you think of salad greens, you most likely conjure up images of deep green lettuce or spinach leaves. But there are other types of greens that add a phenomenal kick to your salad as well—herbs! They’re packed with flavor and are healthy to boot! Try adding in:

  • Basil
  • Cilantro
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Sage
  • Parsley
  • Tarragon
  • Chives
  • Lavender
  • Mint
  • Lemon balm
  • Oregano

Ditch the greens. Iceberg or romaine as a base can get SO boring, especially since your salad doesn’t even have to have a green foundation to begin with. Some other healthy options include:

  • Quinoa
  • Lentils
  • Fruit mixture
  • Chickpeas
  • Couscous
  • Wild or brown rice
  • Shaved broccoli or cauliflower

Drink your salad. Yes, you read that right. Ditch the fork and plate altogether by tossing your salad ingredients in a blender and making them into a smoothie. Some of our favorite smooth ingredients include:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Wheatgrass
  • Avocado
  • Banana
  • Berries
  • Citrus
  • Beet
  • Almond milk
  • Protein powder

Go a little fruity. Not all salads have to be savory. In fact, if you’re battling a sweet tooth, consider trying a fruit-filled salad for a healthy snack option! We like adding pops of sweet and tart with these fruits:

  • Goji berries
  • Acai berries
  • Balled watermelon
  • Pomegranate
  • Orange or grapefruit wedges
  • Slivered strawberries
  • Dried cranberries
  • Apples

Final tips:

  • Use fresh, in-season whenever possible
  • Buy organic produce that is listed on the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list (if not all)
  • Add protein when your salad is your entire meal
  • Avoid whites: white dressing, white breads (think croutons!), and white cheese
  • Add some crunch with seeds and nuts
  • Don’t prep too much—chopped produce goes bad much quicker than whole produce in the fridge
  • Add nuts and seeds right before consuming—sitting in dressing will soften them to a strange consistency

With these simple tips, you can revive a boring salad and spice it up every day of the week. Bon appetite!
