The Fastest Path to Financial Freedom—Introduction & Commitment #1

By #1 New York Times bestselling financial author, Robert G. Allen

Let’s chat about financial freedom, as in, your financial freedom.

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Robert Allen, and I am the author of nine best-selling books on personal finances over the past 30 years, selling millions of copies. I’m proud to say that I have helped guide the purchases of hundreds of thousands of my readers, including their first houses, investment properties and businesses. Thousands have earned financial freedom, and hundreds have even made their first million or several million dollars as a result of the ideas in my books.

A chapter in one of my books discusses what I consider the most important – and least understood – business opportunity that I’ve ever written about. It’s in my 4th book, Multiple Streams of Income, chapter seven, entitled: Network Marketing – The Ultimate Money Machine.

Is this really the most important business opportunity? I am convinced that it is. Each of us needs multiple streams of income – real estate, mutual funds, and internet marketing, to name a few. But network marketing is high on the multiple streams short list. In my opinion, it really is the ultimate money machine.

I’m assuming that you know what network marketing is. When I was first approached about it, I had some preconceived notions that were inaccurate, at best. Based on these uninformed ideas I said no to network marketing for over two decades.

And what were these ideas? To be honest, I thought network marketing was a low-class way for small-minded people to make a few extra bucks by harassing their friends and family into buying garage-loads of expensive products. To be honest, that’s the way multi-level marketing worked for the most part, thirty or forty years ago. But you know what they say about first impressions – they can be very hard to overcome. So when anyone approached me about network marketing, that old image stuck in my head, and I had no problem resisting the temptation.

But thank heaven for a family friend who persisted long enough for me to overcome my prejudice and discover the truth. When I finally researched the major players, companies that had been around for five, ten or even 20 years, I discovered dozens of well-run, successful companies selling incredible products at reasonable prices. Inspired, my wife and I launched our own networking business and, as they say, the rest is history. We worked our way straight to the top, remaining in the top ten income earners of a major company for almost 20 years. The money was great. The experience was magnificent. The people I’ve met (and still meet) in this industry are some of the smartest, nicest, classiest people I’ve ever met, anywhere.

Network marketing is not my only stream of income, but it is my favorite. I like calling myself an author (it has a nice ring to it), but given my personality and what I love to do best, professional networker might be a more accurate description for me.

I’m a big believer in entrepreneurship and the virtues of freedom, and in network marketing I have found an industry that levels the entrepreneurial playing field, putting it within anyone’s reach. Unlike most people facing the high costs of a startup, network marketing entrepreneurs have someone else to manage the hard parts, including product creation, warehousing, distribution, employee benefits, equipment leasing, property acquisition, and so on. They get to concentrate solely on marketing the products and being with people, earning substantial streams of income in the process.

When done right, network marketing is an enlightened, inexpensive way of getting more people involved in entrepreneurship, and ultimately in control of their own financial destinies.

That’s the good news about network marketing. Here’s the bad news: In leveling the playing field, network marketing has attracted a lot of amateurs, beginning entrepreneurs with no grasp of or even interest in the time and effort required to build and grow a successful business. As these newbies stumble around in the startup process, they are bound to make a lot of unprofessional mistakes.

Every respectable profession has a code of ethics, and standards of practice and certification. Doctors earn their diplomas. Lawyers have to pass the bar. Pro athletes have to make the team. These are the things that make them professionals.

It’s time that networkers created and adhered to our own standards of excellence and professionalism. If I could wave a magic wand and transform this industry, it would be to adopt a new professional designation of entrepreneurial excellence. I would call it The PEN: The Professional Enlightened Networker.

To earn the PEN, a beginning networker must agree to adhere to a Code of Commitments. At the very least, there should be five of these areas of commitment.

Commitment #1: I commit to tell the truth.

If you are looking to build a respectable primary or secondary stream of income, network marketing is high on my recommended list. But it is crucial to understand that success will only follow a lot of hard work, as with any business endeavor.

I hate it when I hear someone talk about how easy it is to build a fortune in network marketing. Easy money? That’s a flat-out lie. There is no easy money in this or any other business. It’s going to be hard yards from day one. In fact, don’t come in if you think the money will be easy. Stay away, it’ll be cheaper for all of us. Come in only after you understand the costs.

My wife and worked hard to build our downlines. It took several years. But once the residual streams of income started to flow, it was the most lucrative business we’ve ever done. This is the truth: It will harder than you think. I will take longer than you hope. It will cost more that you want to spend. But when you succeed, it will be worth more than you can possibly imagine.

Can you handle the truth?
